Stones River National Battlefield

Stones River National Battlefield is a beautiful place with a lot of historical significance. It is in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The park is about 600 acres big and has a lot of historical sites, like the battlefield where one of the bloodiest battles of the American Civil War took place. Today, the park is a popular place for history buffs, people who like the outdoors, and anyone who wants to learn about the things that happened in our country’s past.

From December 31, 1862, to January 2, 1863, the Battle of Stones River took place. General William S. Rosecrans was in charge of the Union Army of the Cumberland, which went up against the Confederate Army of Tennessee, which was led by General Braxton Bragg. The battle took place on the banks of the Stones River, which flows into the Cumberland River. The Union won the battle. It was one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. More than 23,000 soldiers were killed, hurt, or went missing.

Some historic sites in the park give visitors an idea of what happened during the battle. The Stones River National Cemetery is one of the most popular things to do at the park. Since it opened in 1865, more than 6,000 Union soldiers who died in the Battle of Stones River and other nearby battles have been laid to rest here. The cemetery is a sad reminder of what people gave up and lost during the Civil War.

The Hazen Brigade Monument is another important site in the park. This monument was built in 1863 to honor the soldiers of Colonel William B. Hazen’s 2nd Brigade of the Union. The brigade was very important in the Battle of Stones River. It stopped several Confederate attacks and helped the Union win the battle. The monument is one of the oldest and most well-known in the park. It shows how brave and selfless the people who fought in the battle were.

In addition to these places, the park has several hiking trails that let people see the battlefield and the area around it. A 10-mile paved trail called the Stones River Greenway goes through the park. It is a beautiful place to walk, run, or ride a bike. The park also has programs led by park rangers, such as battlefield tours, living history shows, and educational programs for school groups.

Another popular place to go in the park is the visitor center, which has a lot of information about the history of the area. The center has a museum with displays about the Civil War and the Battle of Stones River, as well as a movie that tells about what happened during the battle. The center also has a bookstore where people can buy books, maps, and other items about the area’s history.
